Average Halibut Size + Limits
With a life span of 50+ years, Alaskan halibut can grow up to 400+ lbs. While we only see a handful this size come from Alaska each season, the state average is approximately 40 lbs. Alaska’s (3A) current regulations limit anglers to 2 halibut per day with a total limit of 4 per year. While we cannot guarantee catch of fish, we do have success with our guests bringing home desirable halibut on every charter!
Best Halibut Fishing Months
Alaskan halibut are fished for year round, except for January during their spawning time! While having 11 months of fishing, halibut fishing is most productive May- September as they begin to migrate and feed on other fish and invertebrates. While halibut fishing in Alaska is relatively simple, we always strive to prepare our guests for the thrill of a big bite! Ninilchik Charters Catch Information:
While the state average for halibut is 20-40 lbs, 20% of the halibut caught on our boats weigh over 75 lbs. In addition, we have a handful of 100+ pounders every season on our charter boats in all locations. Because of this, we feel our catch rates are some of the best within the Alaska fishery. As each season passes us, 200+ lb halibut (also known as our female breeders) are becoming more and more rare to catch.
In an effort to keep our fishery sustainable, we encourage our guests who are lucky enough to catch and reel in a monster halibut to release them since survival rates are very high for halibut when released properly. For every 200+ lb halibut released on one of our charters, we will honor your conservation awareness and offer a complimentary trip for your next visit.
